Abstract
Digital transformation (DT) poses enormous challenges for companies across all industries. As the most influential decision-makers, top managers play a central role in organizations’ DT process. Prior research has primarily focused on single functional executives, such as the Chief Digital Officer (CDO). However, due to DT’s cross-company nature and the associated wide-ranging tasks, all top managers must participate in DT, requiring a holistic consideration of the TMT. Building on upper echelon theory, we perform an exploratory content analysis based on various top managers’ job resumes to analyze their profiles in terms of education, career experience, and skills. To triangulate the results, we conduct supplementary expert interviews. We contribute to literature by offering a comprehensive understanding of the TMT regarding DT governance. Besides, we show how a CDO’s integration affects other TMT members’ profiles. Our findings sensitize practitioners to consider the whole TMT when addressing the DT.
