Abstract
Unlike doctor-patient relationships in human medicine, professional relationships in veterinary medicine are always about a group of three, consisting of a veterinarian, a pet patient and its owner. In the context of Balint work, the veterinary triad and its underlying ontology can provide a novel perspective on multiple relationships in therapeutic environments and highlight those issues, that turn out to be emotionally stressful for the therapist. Whenever close relatives or legal guardians of a patient - be it human or animal - are involved, the complexity and the overall burden of any therapeutic relationship inevitably increases. In addition, the veterinary triad introduces a relationship which to date has not been considered in the context of Balint work, namely, the relationship between humans and their pets. Pets adopt important and even indispensable roles in the lives of their owners. Working on veterinary cases in Balint groups could be a likely impetus for animals to become a natural and appreciated topic of discussion in future Balint work.
