Abstract

Safe and balanced enteral nutrition is an important component of childhood development, autonomy and quality of life. Children with e.g., anatomical malformations of the oropharyngeal tract, neurological diseases or even short bowel syndrome often require additional or complete enteral nutrition via a tube. Several tube systems are available to provide enteral nutrition. If long-term enteral tube feeding is necessary, percutaneous gastric tube feeding is an established option to improve a child's nutrition and quality of life. There are two main technical approaches to place a so-called percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube. The decision for this approach should be made in a multidisciplinary team, putting the patient and the family at the center of decision making. This continuing medical education (CME) article provides an overview on PEGs, the indications, contraindications, important practical considerations and also solutions to common problems with a PEG. The content follows the current ESPGHAN recommendations from 2015 and 2021.
