Abstract

Young researchers at early career stages benefit immensely from support and networking opportunities. Promotion is required in different areas ranging from building of soft skills to insights in new methods and techniques - both in a research and clinical context. Furthermore, getting known to peers and colleagues is an important step towards building an own network and mentoring is critical for career planning and development. Musculoskeletal research is a rather broad scientific field that requires interdisciplinary networks beyond the borders of specific societies. This article introduces relevant networks for young researchers in the musculoskeletal field in German-speaking countries offering a broad range of training opportunities, symposia, research funds, mentoring and above all a platform for young scientists to interact. We present the MuSkITYR (Muskuloskeletal Interdisciplinary Translational Young Researcher), the Young Forum O and U of the German Society for orthopedics and trauma research, the AGA-students of the German society for arthroscopy and joint surgery, the 'Junge Forum oGU' of the Austrian Society for trauma research and the SSB+RM (Swiss Society for Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine) young scientists. Next to summarizing aims and opportunities of these networks, we also provide a list of events specifically designed for young scientist in musculoskeletal research. This overview shows the great possibilities available to support junior researchers at the beginning of their careers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. However, it is extremely important that principle investigators guide their students in finding and using these opportunities.
