Abstract
The pre-implant reconstruction of complex horizontal and vertical alveolar ridge defects is a major challenge. In three-dimensional bone augmentation with a pronounced vertical component, the use of extraorally harvested bone blocks from the iliac crest region is regarded as the gold standard. As an alternative, the possible uses of the shell technique with autologous, xenogenic, and synthetic materials are presented in three case reports. In the process, the expansion of treatment options for soft and hard tissue augmentation, the avoidance of complications, and the reduction of morbidity for patients have proven advantageous. With the use of ultrasound energy, technology sensitivity is reduced and surgery time is significantly shortened.
