ORCID

What is ORCID?

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a non-profit organization that assigns and manages unique identification numbers (ORCID iDs) for authors. The service is supported internationally by numerous research institutions, funding institutions, scientific publishers and libraries. The University Library of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University München is also a member of ORCID. For more information about connecting with orcid.org, please see: Welcome to ORCID! or watch the Why ORCID? video to learn more.

Registering your ORCID iD

You register your ORCID iD yourself on the ORCID website: https://orcid.org/register. You will receive your ORCID iD, which consists of a 16-character digit combination that can also be used as a URL (e.g. https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6398-1411) and which refers to your ORCID record.

Complete your ORCID record once you have registered your ORCID iD. Enter your ORCID iD in the signature of your e-mails and in your publications. This ensures that your research is always assigned to you.

Purpose and advantages of an ORCID iD

The ORCID iD distinguishes you from other scientists with the same or similar names, no matter under which name variants you publish.

Your ORCID iD remains unchanged throughout your life, linking you to your name and scientific publications. This connection also remains if you change your place of work, your employer, your field of research or even your name. ORCID crosses disciplines and national borders and cooperates with other identification systems such as GND and databases such as Scopus or Web of Science.

ORCID use on Open Access LMU

Connect your ORCID iD to Open Access LMU

On Open Access LMU there is a connection with ORCID. To use your ORCID iD in Open Access LMU, it can be transferred directly from ORCID to Open Access LMU. After logging in, please click on the menu item ORCID Permissions to authorize the use of your ORCID iD in Open Access LMU.

Open Access LMU can then transfer the bibliographic data of your publications to ORCID and link them to your ORCID iD. If you have not yet registered with ORCID, you will be prompted to do so when you click on the "ORCID Permissions" menu item.

If you give Open Access LMU permission to update your ORCID entry, we will also transfer your affiliation with LMU München to ORCID. This information is considered trustworthy by ORCID.

Updating affiliation

When you give Open Access LMU permission to update your ORCID activities, the repository will update your affiliation accordingly.

Import and export to ORCID

Please use the Manage Deposits tab to import or export activity details to ORCID. You will need to grant the appropriate permissions to Open Access LMU. You can grant the permissions while connecting or at any time afterwards. The options to import and export from ORCID will appear on the Manage Deposits page only after you have connected your ORCID (using the Connect to ORCID menu option).

A note about permissions

You are able to change the permissions that you grant to Open Access LMU using the Manage my ORCID permissions menu option. This menu option will become available once you connect to ORCID. Open Access LMU will request permission while connecting to ORCID to do the following:

  1. Connect your ORCID iD to Open Access LMU
  2. Add and update activities to your ORCID record
  3. Retrieve restricted details from your ORCID record

You may revoke or re-instate these permissions at any time after first making the connection with ORCID, either using the ORCID web interface at ORCID.org, or through Open Access LMU using the Manage ORCID permissions tab. If you would like to import activities (including publications) from ORCID into Open Access LMU you need to give permission to Open Access LMU to retrieve your limited access items. If you wish to export items from Open Access LMU to ORCID, you need to enable the permission to create or update ORCID. You are also able to disconnect from ORCID from the Manage ORCID Permissions page.
