Abstract
The majority of premodern population used debt and credit relationships to take an active part in everyday economic life. A significant archive documenting such relationships is part of the records of the town court in Augsburg. Based on an analysis of these records, read in combination with cross-referenced sources, this article provides empirical evidence of the practices of a premodern credit and debt society. Drawing on these sources the article emphasizes the practices, that essentially constituted premodern credit relationships. Special attention however is paid on a situation in debt and credit relationships: rendering account as a calculative practice. What functions calculative practices took, and how these practices could be investigated further is emphasized.
