Abstract
Since the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when folk literature was set alongside 'high literature' as an equal, the interest of folklore studies has tended to be directed at relatively long genres. The small and smallest genres, by contrast, have received, and still receive, less attention. This article calls for these small and largely neglected forms to be considered more closely - they represent a pleasing panorama of material that is given the attention it deserves here through numerous examples and that has many important functions.
