Abstract
This chapter is a typological study of relative clauses (RCs) in Uralic languages. It starts by characterizing relative clauses and explaining the concepts needed to discuss them: externally vs. internally headed RCs, prenominal RCs, restrictive vs. non-restrictive RCs, and the gap strategy. It also introduces the Accessibility Hierarchy of noun phrases, which are more, or less, accessible to relativization (subject > direct object > indirect object > oblique > possessor). The chapter analyzes the general properties of finite relative clauses, provides a summary table of relative pronouns in Uralic, and examines externally and internally headed finite relative clauses as well as inverse attraction. The section on nonfinite relative clauses contains a table of the properties of participles in Uralic, including argument expression, TAM properties, nominal agreement, relativizing capacity, and negation. Each point is illustrated with segmented, glossed, and translated examples from a wealth of languages and sources.
