Abstract

This paper deals with a legal Renaissance map that was drawn by an anonymous author in a lawsuit between the Prince-Bischop of Würzburg Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn (r. 1573–1617) and the protestant family Voit at the Salzburg castle in Lower Franconia. The circular layout of this manuscript map is outstanding. Currently, we have compiled a list of more than 20 (mostly unknown) sixteenth century legal maps and woodcuts, which also possess a round form. Two manuscript maps were made for Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn in 1588 and 1613, as well as a xylograph of the Franconian Imperial Circle in an oval design. It is possible that these round and oval maps influenced the anonymous cartographer of the Salzforst map, but it is more likely that he was directly influenced by Jakob Cay (court painter in Würzburg, florit 1566–1590).
