Abstract
Pragmaticalization has been proposed as a concept to capture specific processes of language change that differ from grammaticalization by leading to the emergence of discourseoriented elements and structures. The present paper provides a critical discussion of this concept on the basis of selected examples from Slavic languages. It proposes a different approach to capture the underlying intuition, namely considering the specific balancing of semiotic qualities, in particular the role of syntagmatic indexicality, as characteristic of alleged “pragmaticalized” structures.
