Abstract

Relative-clause constructions constitute one major type of subordinate-clause linkage serving – in particular, nominal modification. The Slavic languages employ two main strategies of linking matrix clause and relative clause: (1) inflected wh-based pronouns and (2) uninflected markers (plus resumption in specific contexts). While the general picture obtained for the Slavic languages seems quite uniform and congruent with most European languages, differences can be observed in detail, e.g., as concerns the conditions underlying the choice of the relativization strategy. In particular, older and non-standardized varieties exhibit a considerable amount of variation that has been drawing increasing interest in more recent descriptions and analyses.
