Abstract
This paper evaluates a combined palaeographic-computational method to identify scribes in historic documents, more precisely Arabic papyri, where automatic feature extraction is not possible. The challenge is to define features that a human scholar can mark up in a reasonable amount of time, and that are relevant for the given question (e.g., Do we want to identify a scribe, or the period of production?). The paper presents a reference dataset of several dozen securely dated documents belonging to different contexts (private/official/legal), some of which can be assigned to specific persons. Because we had only a limited number of text-independent features at our disposal, the results turned out to be unreliable.
