Abstract

Linguistic variation emerges necessarily from the communicative space. Linguists who want to understand specific languages variants and maybe the development of varieties must therefore reconstruct carefully the their spatial conditions. However, traditional geolinguistics or dialectology cannot deal with this challenge. It is argued that spatial linguistics must take four aspects into consideration: the sociological constellation (what is the officially dominating language?), the pluridimensionality of variation (which dimensions of variation are associated with a variant or a variety?), the speaker's consciousness (to what extent is he aware of using variants?) and the speaker's communicative daily life (which are his socials networks?). The paper discusses several examples of spoken Italian and wants to show that the reshaped approach to linguistic spatiality which is proposed does not intend to substitute dialectology but rather to place space in the foreground of variational linguistics.
