SPODI is a high-resolution thermal neutron diffractometer at theresearch reactor Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) especially dedicated tostructural studies of complex systems. Unique features like a very largemonochromator take-off angle of 155 degrees and a 5 mmonochromator-sample distance in its standard configuration achieve bothhigh-resolution and a good profile shape for a broad scattering anglerange. Two dimensional data are collected by an array of 80 verticalposition sensitive He-3 detectors. SPODI is well suited for studies ofcomplex structural and magnetic order and disorder phenomena atnon-ambient conditions. In addition to standard sample environmentfacilities (cryostats, furnaces, magnet) specific devices (rotatableload frame, cell for electric fields, multichannel potentiostat) weredeveloped. Thus the characterisation of functional materials atin-operando conditions can be achieved. In this contribution the detailsof the design and present performance of the instrument are reportedalong with its specifications. A new concept for data reduction using a2 theta dependent variable height for the intensity integration alongthe Debye-Scherrer lines is introduced.
