Abstract
The following article uses data from ten lexemes, each read by several hundred speakers, to assess the way in which syllable boundaries featuring a possible hiatus are realized in spoken Standard German. Both a regional and a sociolinguistic viewpoint are taken. We argue for a connection between our findings and the genesis of New High German with the interference of a Low German substratum. In addition, we outline the consequences for the hypothesis that German underwent a typological change from a syllable to a word language.
