Abstract
This article deals with sound symbolism, a widely ignored concept. Sound symbolism appears to be a universal phenomenon, but linguistics tends to neglect it or offers heterogeneous approaches and definitions. One question is concerned with the role of naturalness, as assumed in cases like cuckoo, or whether sound symbolic effects are the result of acquired statistical knowledge. Research in sound symbolism as to now doesn't offer any answers. This article tries to illuminate both aspects.
