Abstract

Jokes on proper names are a delicate matter. The following article interprets one such language game on the name Isabel found in Baltasar Gracian's treatise on wit ("Agudeza y arte de ingenio", 1648). By drawing together Gracian's poem and his commentary with Sigmund Freud's reflections on "jokes and their relation to the unconscious" ("Der Witz und seine Beziehung zum Unbewussten", 1905), the author shows that there are not only parallels in these respective theories but that they help in understanding the joke on Isabel. Using Freud's elaborations on tendentious jokes ("Zoten"), the article thus lays bare the aggressive side of this joke that has hitherto been overlooked.
