Abstract

The semantic range of MHG friunt in Minnesang has hitherto attracted little attention among researchers. This study differentiates the semantic range of the word from the concepts of 'lover' to 'wooing admirer', as well as between an individual suitor and a number of admirers. This enables us to trace different logics of integration, in which the wooing singer remains integrated in the circle of courtiers, from which he can distinguish himself only gradually. Minnesang is seen as a semantic resource for courtly self-styling which also contains spaces for confidential communication.
