Abstract
Free meter hymnic poetry is one of the most important sub-genres in German poetry. The tradition includes eminent texts by Klopstock, Goethe, Novalis, Holderlin, Heine, Platen, Nietzsche, George, Lasker-Schuler, and Rilke. In this article I show that throughout the genre tradition liminal aspects are crucial to these texts, not only in blurring the limits between the human and the divine in particular, but also in social, formal, poetic and communicative respects.
