Abstract

Since the late 1950s, the Federal Republic of Germany provided financial and technical support to countries all over the world. Additionally, the German federal states conducted advanced vocational training courses. Being responsible for cultural affairs, they played a significant role in framing educational development programmes. Scholarships were awarded to students, specialists and executive staff from so-called developing countries. Based on a Bavarian case study, this article shows that the goal of development aid in the field of education was not only the transfer of knowledge and the support of foreign trade contacts, but also the establishment of long-lasting international connections.
