Abstract

The author reads" Beyond the Pleasure Principle" against the backdrop of the projected "bioanalysis" that Sigmund Freud and Sandor Ferenczi jointly planned but never completed. Ferenczi defined bioanalysis as a speculative science rigorously transposing psychoanalytic concepts and methods to the natural sciences. Retrospectively, the "bioanalysis" project can be seen as an experimental set-up in the framework of which Ferenczi and Freud experimented with a counter-narrative pitted against the increasing biologization of the social sector. Freud's speculations about the unicellular creature in the fourth chapter of "Beyond" are a telling example. Their relevance resides in the refusal to have any truck with the hodgepodge of biologistic perfection fantasies and esoteric purity ideals the fatal impact of which only materialized to its full extent in the decades after "Beyond the Pleasure Principle".
