Abstract
An analysis of the wording of the Echidna chapter of the first redaction of the Physiologus as well as the New Testament, natural history and mythological traditions incorporated in it, as well as a comparison with the various further adaptations in the later redactions, shows that the anonymous Christian author of this writing takes up familiar texts and traditions here in order to create a new interpretation, as he also does in other chapters of his writing.
