Abstract
This contribution provides a sensible system for differentiating among various public relations (PR) definitions before differentiating between journalism and PR and elaborating on the relationship between both and their interdependencies. It briefly delineates attempts at differentiation and discusses particular challenges, such as the emergence of social media which make it seemingly more difficult to identify a strict separation between journalism and PR. Social media enable PR to circumvent classic mass media and journalism. The contribution describes how this and other recent developments have changed the professional relationship between journalism and PR.
