Abstract

Following the predominantly negative results of the examination of older dating proposals for the materials unique to the Masoretic version of the book of Jeremiah in the first part of the article, this second part undertakes to develop reliable dating criteria. The age of the youngest units still included within the Alexandrian version of the book, the reinterpretation of the Elam oracle 49.34-39, as well as characteristic features of the Masoretic Sondergut (conceptual abstinence, homogenization even beyond the boundaries of the book, preservation of errors, the survival of distinctive idiolectal elements), point to the third century as the period of origin for the majority of the readings unique to the Masoretic version. With regard to current debates about linguistic dating methods, these results give reason to evaluate the accuracy of such methods as rather low.
