Abstract
The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek keeps an artistically handcrafted pair of manuscript globes from the 16th century whose history of creation can be traced very well through written sources: The Bavarian Duke Albrecht V. (1550-1579), founder of the Court Library in Munich, had seen an impressive, non-preserved globe pair in the trading family Fugger's Augsburg residence. Albrecht wanted to acquire the globes in 1572, which failed because of their poor state of repair. He therefore decided to commission a new globe pair for the library of his ' Antiquarium' in Munich, built during 1568-1571. For this purpose, he first commissioned the Munich sculptor and stone-mason Hans Aernhofer to create two mountings ("...zwai Khugel gestel ..."), which served as robust support for the globes until the second world war. They were, however, inadvertently exchanged with each other during their restoration in the 20th century.
