Lexical vs. Grammatical Meaning Revisited

Abstract

This paper deals with the distinction between lexicon and grammar, particularly between lexical and grammatical meaning. Using the example of function words, I will first review some relevant literature from Cognitive Linguistics (section 1.1), Formal Semantics (section 1.2) as well as Modistic Theory (section 1.3) and next suggest an alternative account which provides clear-cut categories of lexical vs. grammatical meaning (section 1.4). Additionally, my account will tentatively be extended to syntax and beyond (section 2).
