Abstract

This edited volume brings together a diverse set of studies on the 1864 Caucasian exile, combining historiographical assessments with original research based on newly accessed primary sources. While some contributions focus on reviewing existing scholarship, many offer new empirical findings, and several conference-style papers addressing broader frameworks or contemporary implications are included to strengthen the thematic coherence of the work. The articles are organized under five main headings: historiography and public perceptions; the causes and process of the 1864 migration; the settlement of migrants in Anatolia, the Balkans, and the Middle East; migrants’ integration into the Ottoman Empire and their present-day conditions; and evaluations of archival sources and documents.

The volume examines Russian imperial policies in the Caucasus, forced displacement and migration routes, settlement strategies of the Ottoman state, public health crises during migration, and the social, economic, and political challenges faced by migrants. Case studies from regions such as Trabzon, Samsun, Kars, Anatolia, the Balkans, and Syria illustrate local dynamics of resettlement and adaptation. In addition, the book addresses diaspora organizations, contemporary political developments in the Caucasus, and demographic documentation. Overall, the volume demonstrates that the 1864 Caucasian exile was a large-scale humanitarian tragedy and provides a foundational reference that highlights unresolved questions while offering a starting point for future research.
