Abstract

This volume presents a comprehensive and multidisciplinary study of the historical, social, cultural, and economic development of Tonya, a valley settlement in the Eastern Black Sea region. Bringing together contributions by leading scholars, the book traces Tonya’s history from its early formation through the Ottoman period and into the Republican era. The chapters examine Tonya’s administrative evolution, its role within regional power structures during the ayanlık and derebeylik period, and its transformation under the Tanzimat reforms. Using a wide range of primary sources, including court records, population registers, and archival documents, the volume sheds light on local governance, social life, family structures, and demographic change.

In addition to political and administrative history, the work explores Tonya’s cultural heritage through studies on regional history, linguistic characteristics, and folklore, including a detailed analysis of the Tonya dialect and vocabulary. The impact of major historical events such as the First World War and the occupation years is also addressed. The volume further extends its scope to contemporary issues by discussing strategies for local economic development. Supplementary sections provide a bibliography, chronology, inventories of historical monuments, and visual documentation, making the book both a scholarly reference and a valuable resource for local history studies.
