Abstract
This master’s thesis examines the representation of Greece and Greek–Turkish relations in the Türk Ansiklopedisi, one of the most influential reference works produced in Turkey during the Republican period. Using the encyclopedia as its primary source, the study analyzes how Greece, Greek history, and interactions between Greeks and Turks are constructed, categorized, and narrated. The thesis first situates the Türk Ansiklopedisi within the broader historiography of Greek–Turkish relations and evaluates its scope, structure, and editorial approach. The articles related to Greece are classified into three main groups—Ancient Greek, Byzantine, and Modern Greek—allowing for a systematic assessment of thematic emphasis and proportional representation.
The core of the study focuses on the historical depiction of Greek–Turkish relations from antiquity to the contemporary era, including pre-Ottoman interactions, Byzantine–Turkic relations, Byzantine–Seljuk and Byzantine–Ottoman encounters, the conquest of Constantinople, the status of Greeks within the Ottoman Empire, the Greek War of Independence, conflicts of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Turkish War of Independence, and post-war issues such as population exchange, Cyprus, Western Thrace, and the Aegean. By critically evaluating narrative patterns, terminology, and interpretive frameworks, the thesis reveals dominant perspectives and underlying assumptions in the encyclopedia, contributing to a deeper understanding of image construction, historiography, and collective memory in Turkish historical writing.
