Abstract
This book seeks to trace and revise our view of the relationship of music and theatre from the perspective of theatre history in the modern and postmodern period, demonstrating how music has continued to be immensely influential in key developments of theatre. The new perspective offered derives from two shifts in focus: on the one hand, the book will concentrate in particular on theatre-making, i.e. the creation processes of theatre, on the other it will trace a notion of “musicality” as driver of theatrical innovation, i.e. focus on musical qualities, metaphors and principles, rather than necessarily on actual music.
