Abstract
The research analyses the concepts of "borders" and "frontiers" in the Neo-Assyrian period and the many roles played by fortified settlements of various kinds in the creation and maintenance of frontier areas during the Assyrian Empire (10th-7th century BC). With the aim of giving a comprehensive picture of the many aspects related to the perception of frontier areas and administration, the research has been divided in two major parts, one dedicated to the ideological aspects related to frontiers and fortifications, and a second dedicated to the different territorial policies that can be analysed in each frontier area of the Empire.
