Abstract
During the modern wars of Japan textiles with motifs related to war have been mass produced. These kimono, underkimono, jackets and accessories, such as obi, show images of modern war: tanks, airplanes, battleships and smiling soldiers. In the Western world they have frequently been called "Propaganda Kimonos". However, the author argues, that there are many more and different reasons for the popularity of those textiles; not all of them have to do with patriotism or support of the war.
