Abstract

About 75 years after the Holocaust, the police have recorded an increase in antisemitic crimes in Germany;as a threatened minority, Jewish people worry about the social climate of opinion, which is also shaped by the established mass media. Against this background, this article uses the normative concept of intercultural media integration to examine the media coverage of the weekly newspaper Judische Allgemeine. The findings of the qualitative content analysis of 168 contributions show that the publication, which is published by the Central Council of Jews in Germany, is fiercely critical of established media in various respects. For example, individual media outlets spread antisemitic stereotypes, offered a platform to persons who express antisemitic views, and failed to recognize, relativize or negate antisemitism as such. In the sense of a differentiated critique of the media, however, Judische Allgemeine also makes clear which features of media content it considers desirable, including reports on everyday Jewish life in Germany, but also authentic contributions about antisemitism in which those affected have their say. On the one hand, the findings can help to understand why many Jews in Europe see antisemitism in the media as a problem. On the other hand, they provide producers of media offerings with indications of how their content resonates within the Jewish community.
