Abstract
This paper, published in Gruppe. Interaktion. Organisation. (GIO), reports about the development, implementation, and evaluation of a networking training. Networking serves as an important competency to enhance the development of professional resources and will gain in importance with the rise of complex, knowledge-based, digitized tasks. Learning the art of networking is thus essential. This study reports on the development of a networking training based on Action Regulation Theory and Social Cognitive Theory and also on the evaluation (N = 37) of the training. The training teaches competences on how to build, maintain and use contacts in a professional context and is evaluated on various levels with a pretest and three posttests over 12 months and also employs a nonequivalent control variable strategy. Analyses show significant increases in knowledge on networking, networking related self-efficacy, networking behaviors, and an increase in the number of contacts in professional online networking platforms. The training, based upon theoretically derived instruction strategies thus advances individuals' competencies in building, maintaining and using professional network online and offline.
