Abstract
A “group” exists whenever two or more individuals perceive themselves as belonging to a social category that defines these individuals’ identity. The extent to which individuals identify with groups to which they belong varies as a function of the respective group and its features (e.g., its social status) and the social context but also as a function of the individual. Among the different aspects of identification, deference – which describes individuals’ adherence to group norms and their submission to group authorities – is relatively stable across group contexts.
