Abstract

This paper examines the visitatio sepulchri ceremony of Essen Abbey. The article suggests that, by tonally rising three times, the resurrection call assumes an exceptional representational place within the liturgy of this abbey, which is well known for its plentiful and symbolic use of sacral objects and meaningful liturgical gestures.
