Abstract

Based on the problem of motivating learners in traditional instruction, we investigate the con-ceptualisation of motivation and motivational effects in approaches of situated instruction. Assumptions concerning motivational effects of various design principles of the anchored instruction approach are discussed and evaluated. On the one hand, these assumptions are plausible. On the other hand, motivation is conceptualised insufficiently and the operationaliza-tion of motivational aspects is not very sophisticated. Current as well as earlier concepts of motivation can be related to the motivational hypotheses formulated in the anchored instruction approach. From the perspective of "radical" socio-constructivism, such a theoretical recon-struction of motivational hypotheses is not permitted because its results are incompatible with various assumptions of this paradigm. However, there are good reasons for taking a moderate constructivist position, for example with respect to the question of "distributedness" of cogni-tion. When cognitivist concepts of motivation are reconciled with approaches of situated in-struction, it should be considered that a different meaning can be attributed to these concepts as well as features of the learning environment. Hence, other instructional effects can be ex-pected. Additionally, consequences concerning methodology and methods are indicated. Tradi-tional experimental research methods are to be completed by qualitative procedures. When theory construction and development of investigation methods are adapted to each other pro-gressively, scientific progress is to be expected which allows a more theory-driven design of situated learning environments. These learning environments might furnish helpful instructional remedies for the problem of motivating learners.
