Abstract

Social robots made to interact with humans have increasingly entered various domains in recent years. For example, they support patients in elderly care, treat children with autism or just serve as adorable companions in everyday life. With the objective of highly naturalistic interactions with humans, there has been a vast amount of research trying to identify suitable personalities for social robots. However, the theoretical foundations of the construct social robot personality, its expression, its measurement, and if and how it influences outcomes of human—robot interaction (HRI) are areas of continued debate. To shed light on this debate, we provide a narrative review of interdisciplinary literature on social robot personality. In particular, we describe common themes and limitations within four areas: Conceptualization, expression, measurement, and consequences of perceived social robot personality. Building upon research gaps identified, we further provide a research agenda aiming to encourage scholars to target opportunities for future research. More specifically, we highlight the need for further research in eight areas: (1) Personality theories beyond the Big Five, (2) individual differences, (3) the interaction of human and robot personality, (4) situational context and robotic social roles, (5) anthropomorphism, (6) cultural differences, (7) long-term interactions, and finally (8) the exploration of an integrative design approach towards social robot personality. Combining the limitations and research opportunities identified this review serves as a roadmap for scholars to progress the design of adequate human—robot interactions.
