Abstract
The goal of the study was to find qualitative shifts in knowledge application processes during the development of expertise in the domain of business management. The problem solving processes of novices (17 students of education) and intermediate experts (18 graduate students of economics) in a computer-based simulation game were analysed. The results showed that the intermediate experts had serious difficulties in effectively applying their pre-knowledge; they were outperformed by the novices with regard to problem solving performance. Single case analyses revealed several reasons for the intermediates' deficits in knowledge application.
