Abstract

This paper deals with the interplay of feature and prototype theory. The construction of word fields in early language acquisition is investigated. Several problems beyond the scope of semantic theory are discussed to indicate the limits of this study. Data show, however, that the construction of early word fields in first language acquisition can be seen with regard to a model of meaning, in which lexical meaning is represented as the dynamic combination of a prototype and a structured bundle of features within a word field, in order that individual and diachronic, regular as well as context-bound variation of meaning is possible.
