Abstract

It was investigated to what extent action competence and motivation in the domain of economics can be fostered by two instructional means. In a 22 factorial design, the effects of multiple learning contexts (uniform learning contexts vs. multiple learning contexts) and guided problem-solving (no guidance vs. guidance) were analyzed. 60 vocational students were randomly assigned to the four conditions. Subjects worked on an economics computer simulation. Depending on the specific aspects of action competence and motivation, different learning conditions proved to be effective. Taking the real situations in vocational education into account, our results provide evidence that the most preferable condition is the condition with an increased complexity (multiple learning contexts) in accompany with instructional support (guidance).
